X has begun rolling out its new “About This Account” feature, but early inaccuracies in the system have already led to widespread confusion and political accusations across the platform.

The feature, introduced on Monday, displays two details for each account: the country it was created in and the country it is “based” in. Head of product Nikita Bier acknowledged the rollout had “a few rough edges” and said fixes would arrive by Tuesday.

However, shortly after launch, X removed the “created in” data entirely, stating the information “was not 100 percent,” particularly for older accounts.

Users Weaponizing Misinformation

Instead of treating the feature cautiously, many users quickly weaponized the inaccurate data. Claims that political opponents were “foreign operatives” spread widely, even as some of the same users admitted their own account information was incorrect.

In several cases, high-profile accounts showed implausible locations. Hank Green’s account appeared as Japan-based. MusicTech, a sister publication of the UK’s NME, was listed in the United States. ProTools maker AVID showed up as being in Spain.

The inaccuracies may stem from several factors. Travel can temporarily change an account’s detected location. Organizations with staff in multiple countries may appear “based” elsewhere. VPN use and outdated IP address information can also distort results.

Foreign influence operations and coordinated “rage-bait” accounts are legitimate concerns on X. Troll farms have targeted US political discourse for years, and engagement-driven monetization models encourage inflammatory content.

But the flawed rollout has blurred the line between real threats and false accusations, creating another cycle of confusion and hostility on the platform.
