UK Imposes Stricter Conditions on Refugees Seeking Permanent ResidencyUK Imposes Stricter Conditions on Refugees Seeking Permanent Residency
The United Kingdom has announced major changes to its asylum system, making refugee status temporary and extending the path to permanent residency to 20 years.
The Labour government introduced the reforms as part of a tougher immigration approach driven by rising concern over illegal small-boat crossings and growing political pressure from the Reform UK party. The Home Office said it will adopt elements of Denmark’s strict asylum model.
Under the new rules, asylum seekers who are able to work but choose not to, as well as those who break the law, will no longer receive government housing or weekly allowances. Officials said financial support will be reserved for people who contribute to the economy and their communities.
The Home Office confirmed that refugee protection will now be temporary. Authorities will review each refugee’s status every two and a half years and revoke it if the person’s home country is deemed safe.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the previous system effectively granted settlement after five years, a process the government plans to end. She is expected to announce additional changes on Monday, including new guidance on how Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights is applied.
More than 100 charities have criticized the government’s approach, warning that the new policies stigmatize migrants and fuel hostility.
