South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock made headlines once again after he equaled Sanath Jayasuriya’s record for the most ODI hundreds against India, becoming only the seventh player to score seven or more centuries against a single team in the format.
De Kock’s latest hundred added his name to an elite list already featuring Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Aaron Finch, Saeed Anwar, Jayasuriya, and Sachin Tendulkar.
India, who finally won a toss after 21 international matches, decided to bowl first and introduced their third different opening combination of the ODI series.
Aiden Markram, fresh from a match-winning 110 in Raipur, was pushed down to No.5 as Ryan Rickelton returned to partner de Kock at the top. But Rickelton’s struggles continued, falling for a second consecutive duck.
Temba Bavuma steadied the innings with a fluent 48, adding 113 runs for the second wicket with de Kock, who looked in complete control. Even after the quick exits of Matthew Breetzke and Markram, de Kock kept the scoreboard moving and reached his hundred off 80 balls, bringing it up with a powerful six over square leg.
His innings ended soon after on 106 off 89 balls when Prasidh Krishna knocked back his stumps, giving the fast bowler his third wicket of the match.
De Kock’s earlier centuries against India include three in a 2013 home series, two during the 2015 tour of India, and another in the 2022 home series.
