OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser that embeds ChatGPT into everyday browsing tasks, with a worldwide macOS release today for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users. Windows, iOS, and Android versions are planned.
Atlas places ChatGPT in the new-tab flow to handle queries, search, and inline writing without switching tabs. The browser can use context from a user’s web history, currently open pages, and logged-in sites to tailor responses and suggestions, according to OpenAI.
The product is built to remember useful details from previous sessions so it can resurface pages, automate repeated steps, and continue past work. Users can issue natural-language commands—such as reopening items viewed the day before or tidying open tabs—and Atlas executes those actions inside the browser.
OpenAI is also previewing an agent mode that runs natively in Atlas. In this preview, ChatGPT can take actions on behalf of the user directly in the browser. Access to agent mode is limited to Plus, Pro, and Business tiers during the preview period.
The company emphasized privacy controls. Users can clear browsing history or use incognito mode. Browser memories are opt-in and can be viewed or managed at any time, and OpenAI said it does not use the content people browse by default to train its models.
OpenAI framed Atlas as part of a broader push toward a context-aware assistant that helps with research, shopping and planning, work and productivity, and general learning. Additional details, including availability notes, use cases, safety information, and a product blog, are provided in the company’s press materials.
You can download ChatGPT Atlas here but the browser is currently available for Mac only.
