Major Update After Reports of Sri Lanka Canceling Pakistan Tour

The ongoing Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan will continue as planned, despite security concerns following a suicide bombing in Islamabad that left 12 people dead and several injured.

Earlier reports claimed the second ODI had been canceled after 16 Sri Lankan players opted to return home.

However, both cricket boards have now confirmed that the series remains on schedule.

Officials from both boards are coordinating closely to reassure teams and stabilize the situation following the attack.

PCB is also working with law enforcement to strengthen security around the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, where the remaining matches are scheduled.

Authorities have tightened security in and around the stadium and the teams’ hotel.

Additional checkpoints and surveillance have been set up.

Officials reaffirmed that all safety protocols are being followed to ensure a smooth continuation of the series.

Despite the tragedy, Sri Lanka Cricket has expressed its commitment to completing the tour.

Both boards emphasized that cricket must continue as a sign of resilience and unity between the two nations.

Pakistan-Sri Lanka Cricket Love Affair Continues

The deep cricketing bond between Pakistan and Sri Lanka goes beyond the current tour.

In March 2009, the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked near Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Six police officers and two civilians lost their lives, while seven players and staff were injured.

The attack shut Pakistan’s doors to international cricket for several years.

Eight years later, in 2017, Sri Lanka became the first major team to tour Pakistan since that tragic event.

The move marked a historic turning point, signaling to the cricketing world that Pakistan was once again safe to host international matches.

At the time, then–Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala said, “It’s a wonderful cricketing nation. Pakistan has done so much for world cricket and for sports in general, so we cannot leave them in isolation.”

That gesture of solidarity helped revive international cricket in Pakistan, and today, despite renewed security concerns, both nations remain committed to keeping that spirit alive.
