Karachi is preparing for one of its largest traffic management upgrades as the city’s traffic police move ahead with new technology-driven reforms to tackle chronic congestion and rising road accidents.

The initiatives were detailed by DIG Traffic Karachi Peer Muhammad Shah during a briefing at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday. At the center of the reforms is the newly formed Karachi Traffic Management Company, which will supervise traffic engineering.

One of the biggest upgrades is the installation of smart traffic signals. Each unit will cost about Rs. 7.5 million, and Karachi will need around 400 of them, bringing the total investment to roughly Rs. 3 billion.

Officials expect the smart signals to improve vehicle flow and reduce bottlenecks on major corridors. DIG Shah also noted that the city’s e-challan system is already showing results.

Monthly traffic accidents have dropped from 96 to 46 since digital enforcement began. He added that the fine structure is designed to ensure compliance, and first-time offenders can still get their penalties waived through the 11 facilitation centers operating across the city.
