HMD is Making Its First Ever Laptop – And It Might Be a Chromebook Flip

HMD, the company that took over Nokia’s phone business before expanding into its own smartphone lineup, appears to be preparing a move into laptops for the first time.

A new leak from X user @smashx_60 claims HMD is developing a 2-in-1 Chromebook known as the HMD (Chrome)Book CS-1 Flip, or HMD Book CS-1 Flip. The “Flip” branding suggests a 360-degree hinge and touchscreen, similar to convertible Chromebooks already on the market.

I’ve had info on this model since mid-year, Based on the render showing multitasking and the Play Store, I’m unsure if it runs ChromeOS or Android replacing ChromeOS. The name is HMD Book CS-1 Flip, but I don’t know if ‘Chrome’ will precede it.

Over the past two years, HMD has broadened its portfolio beyond feature phones, adding Android tablets and more accessories. A laptop, however, would be a new category for the Finnish company.

There have been laptops with Nokia branding in the past, such as the PureBook series, but those were produced by a separate licensing partner that is no longer active. This time, the product is expected to come directly from HMD itself.

Specifications remain limited, but the leak indicates the CS-1 Flip will use an Intel processor, which is notable because many entry-level Chromebooks rely on ARM-based chips from MediaTek.

Key details such as the screen size, chip model, RAM and storage options, pricing, and target audience are still unknown.

If the device launches, it will enter a crowded Chromebook segment dominated by Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Samsung. However, a leak that includes a full product name often suggests development is already well underway.

More information is likely to surface soon if HMD is preparing to introduce its first laptop under its own brand.
