The federal government has decided to complete the 200-bed cancer hospital in the federal capital by 2026, aiming to provide dedicated treatment and care facilities to cancer patients.
Details regarding preventive measures for breast cancer were also presented in the National Assembly during the question hour session.
According to the federal health minister, a total of 376,998 breast cancer cases were reported in Pakistan in 2023. He informed the House that 25,796 women lost their lives to the disease during the same year. The minister said the planned government hospital in Islamabad will play an important role in providing specialized facilities and treatment to cancer patients who currently face limited options in the public sector.
The health minister stated that the federal government is running an effective awareness campaign to prevent breast cancer and to encourage early diagnosis. He added that Pakistan’s healthcare system has increasingly become a “sick-care system” rather than a preventive healthcare model. He noted that every year the country is adding a population equivalent to New Zealand and highlighted ongoing issues such as poor sanitation, saying, “We are drinking sewage.”
During the session, MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan raised the issue of rising cervical cancer cases, asking how many people were currently affected. The health minister responded that no consolidated national record exists for the disease. He said he had discussed the matter with the NADRA chairman and proposed that the national identity card number should also serve as a medical identification number to centralize health data.
The minister added that more than five thousand women die from cervical cancer annually in Pakistan and stressed the government’s commitment to protecting young girls through preventive measures and improved healthcare initiatives.
