Google has announced that beginning March 1, 2026, the Play Store will introduce new alerts for apps that could drain a phone’s battery faster because of excessive background activity.

The company outlined this initiative in a recent blog post, detailing a new “excessive partial wake lock” metric. Developed jointly with Samsung and rolled out in beta earlier this year, this metric is now available to all Android app developers. It is designed to identify apps that keep devices awake unnecessarily, a key cause of faster battery drain.

Google has set a new “bad behavior threshold” to flag apps that hold non-essential wake locks for too long. According to the guidelines, if an app holds more than two hours of non-exempt wake locks within 24 hours, it may trigger a warning. Essential wake locks used for necessary functions, such as audio playback or data transfer, are not counted.

Further, if at least 5% of an app’s user sessions show excessive wake locks over a 28-day window, the app will be flagged. Apps that do not meet these standards risk being excluded from Play Store recommendations, and users may see a warning on the app’s Play Store listing about potential battery drain.

With this move, Google aims to give users more transparency and help them avoid apps that negatively impact battery life. Developers are encouraged to review their apps and ensure compliance before the policy takes effect next year.
