Google Gemini App Gets AI Video Generation Upgrade
Google Gemini App Gets AI Video Generation Upgrade
Google has started rolling out Veo 3’s Ingredients to the Video tool inside the Gemini app, bringing a feature that first appeared in Flow to a wider group of users. The update allows people to guide video generation by uploading reference photos, giving them more control over characters, objects, and visual style. The feature is available to subscribers of Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra.
How the Feature Works
Ingredients to Video was introduced alongside the Veo 3.1 model on October 15. It lets users provide reference images, including those created with Imagen, that influence the final video. These images help maintain character consistency across scenes, apply specific lighting or artistic styles, and build custom environments that match a user’s intended world. The goal is to reduce the amount of text required in prompts and make the video-creation process more direct.

Google has also updated the Gemini app to display which video-generation model is being used. The information appears in the Gemini Tools menu and will show Veo 3.1 when it powers the output.
Even with the expanded control, Veo 3.1 remains more restricted than rival tools such as OpenAI’s Sora. Gemini and Veo 3 still refuse to produce certain types of videos, while competing platforms allow more flexibility. Google continues to position Ingredients to Video as a faster way to create short clips, even if its guardrails are tighter.
Rollout Timeline
The simpler photo-to-video creation process is launching today. Google says it will reach all eligible paid users next week. For now, the feature remains exclusive to Google’s AI subscription tiers and is not available in the free version of Gemini.
