Recently released emails of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein show that he described Pakistan cricket legend and former prime minister Imran Khan as a major “threat to peace” shortly after the PTI’s victory in the 2018 general elections.
The emails, made public by Democrats on the US House Oversight Committee, include a July 31, 2018, exchange in which Epstein referred to Imran Khan in a conversation with an unidentified correspondent.
Epstein, who was arrested in 2019 on charges of sex trafficking minors and died later that year in a Manhattan jail, discussed a wide range of political topics in the email chain. At one point, he commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s behavior and America’s history of meddling in other countries’ elections.
Just minutes later, he brought up Pakistan’s newly elected leader, writing that Imran posed a “much greater threat to peace” than Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, China’s President Xi Jinping, or even Putin.
His correspondent responded in disbelief, asking whether Epstein was referring to “the populist in Pakistan.” Epstein replied that Imran was “really bad news.”
When the other person questioned how Imran could be more dangerous than Islamist leaders, Epstein continued with a string of personal accusations, calling him “incapable of truth,” labeling him a “devout Islamist,” and pointing to Pakistan’s nuclear weapons as part of his concern. He also made unverified claims about Imran’s past marriages.
Epstein added that Imran was skilled at energizing crowds, describing him as “a cricket captain, not a chess player,” before the email thread shifted to another subject roughly 40 minutes later.
Emails Highlight Epstein’s Far-Reaching Network
The new email batch also sheds light on Epstein’s extensive list of high-profile contacts, including advisers to former US President Donald Trump and Britain’s Prince Andrew. Some of the emails suggest Trump was aware of Epstein’s misconduct, a claim Trump has strongly denied.
The US House of Representatives is expected to vote soon on whether to compel the release of all evidence collected on Epstein over the years, including the identities of individuals allegedly connected to his trafficking operations. While Trump has dismissed the renewed scrutiny as a “hoax,” he has simultaneously urged investigators to look into Epstein’s ties with others, notably former President Bill Clinton.
Documents released so far by congressional Democrats span a decade, from 2009 until Epstein’s death in 2019, offering the most detailed look yet at the disgraced financier’s communications.
