Apple’s Tim May Not Be Cooked After All

Reports claiming Tim Cook will step down as Apple CEO in early 2026 appear to be premature. A recent story from the Financial Times suggested Cook could exit the company between January and June 2026, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that timeline is not accurate.

In other words, current CEO Tim may not be Cooked anytime soon.

Gurman Calls Exit Rumors “Shocking”

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said he would be “shocked” if Cook leaves by mid-2026. He added that no internal signs are showing Apple is preparing for an immediate leadership change. Cook, who turned 65 this month, is still heavily involved in Apple’s product roadmap, including the company’s next phase of AI development.

Gurman confirmed that Apple has been planning for Cook’s eventual departure, but nothing suggests it will happen soon.

John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is still the top internal candidate to take over. Ternus oversees the development of the iPhone, Mac, and Vision Pro and has taken on more responsibilities within the company.

The Financial Times claimed Apple could announce Cook’s exit plan before WWDC 2026 to ensure a smooth transition. Gurman disputed this, stating that the report did not come from people with direct knowledge of Apple’s plans and was not part of any internal communication or strategic leak. He also dismissed theories that the story was released to test public response.

Gurman added that Cook’s track record gives him the freedom to choose when to step down. After leaving the CEO role, Cook is expected to remain as Chairman of the Board, allowing him to guide Apple’s long-term direction.

Cook’s Legacy at Apple

Tim Cook became CEO in 2011 after the death of Steve Jobs. Under his leadership, Apple became the first company to reach a $3 trillion valuation and launched major products, including the Apple Watch, AirPods, the M-series Macs, and the Vision Pro.
