Apple is expected to shift its iPhone release timeline next year. Reports suggest the company may not launch the standard iPhone 18 lineup in 2026. Instead, Apple’s annual September event could introduce only three premium models: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Fold.

Lower-cost models are expected to follow months later. These include the iPhone Air 2 and the budget-focused iPhone 18e, both reportedly scheduled for spring 2027. The foldable iPhone is expected to be the most expensive device among the six models, with Investing estimating a starting price of $2,399.

Pricing Expectations

Earlier estimates placed the iPhone 18 Fold between $2,000 and $2,500. A price near $2,000 would place it alongside other foldables such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. A price closer to $2,500 would make Apple’s foldable the costliest option in the category.

Why the iPhone Fold Will Be Expensive

Fubon analyst Arthur Liao expects worldwide smartphone shipments to fall by 4% in 2026 to 1.2 billion units. Sales in China are projected to reach 275 million units, marking a 3% decline. Global iPhone shipments are forecast to drop by 4% to 234 million units. Liao noted that rising component costs will be a challenge for smartphone makers next year.

RAM prices are already 75% higher this quarter compared to the same period last year. The total bill of materials could rise by 5 to 7 percent in 2026 due to increased demand for chips, memory, and storage.

For the iPhone Fold, Liao pointed to several components that will raise the price, including the OLED panel, the hinge, and lightweight internals. Another report this week repeated claims that the iPhone Fold may feature a crease-free display. Earlier reports said Apple plans to address the crease issue in foldables, even if it requires buying more expensive crease-free panels from Samsung.

Fubon’s $2,399 estimate reflects both supply chain data and Apple’s margin requirements.

Sales Outlook

Despite the high price, Liao believes the iPhone Fold could help boost the smartphone industry. Fubon expects Apple to sell 15.4 million units overall, with 5.4 million of those sales taking place in 2026.
