Pakistan Railways has decided to outsource 11 more passenger trains, a move expected to generate an additional Rs. 8.5 billion for the state-run operator.

Officials briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday that tenders for all 11 trains have already been issued. The railways has previously outsourced four trains to private operators.

The briefing also confirmed that several other railway assets are being shifted to private management. Authorities are outsourcing railway hospitals in Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta and Sukkur, while schools, colleges and rest houses are already in the process of being handed over.

Dry ports in Islamabad, Lahore and Azakhail are also moving to private operators. Officials added that outsourcing 40 luggage and brake vans is expected to earn another Rs. 820 million.

They said the outsourcing of two cargo express trains is still in progress and could bring in an additional Rs. 6.3 billion.
