New Speed Limits Announced Across KarachiNew Speed Limits Announced Across Karachi

The Karachi Traffic Police has officially set speed limits on all major roads in the city, according to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah.

Under the new regulations, motorcycles and light transport vehicles (LTVs) will be allowed a maximum speed of 60 kilometres per hour, while the limit for heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) has been restricted to 30 kilometres per hour.

DIG Shah announced that speed-monitoring systems equipped with cameras are being installed citywide to track and record vehicle speeds. Additionally, trackers are being fitted in 10,000 heavy vehicles, which will be linked to the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) for real-time monitoring and data collection.

While speaking to The Express Tribune on Saturday, Shah said that TRACS has become operational across 40% of Karachi, currently integrated with 1,717 cameras. The system is fully functional in District South, with major arteries, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, already connected.

E-challans are now being issued in Malir, Korangi, East, Keamari, and Central districts for various traffic violations, including overspeeding, signal violations, wrong-way driving, failure to wear helmets, and not fastening seat belts.

DIG Shah added that the system will soon extend to industrial zones such as SITE, Landhi, New Karachi, and Korangi, incorporating camera-based surveillance, speed detection, and TRACS connectivity.

He further revealed that Karachi’s Traffic Management System will be fully implemented by next year, with the installation of an additional 11,000 cameras set to begin in January 2026.
