Spanish authorities have dismantled an international smuggling network accused of trafficking nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” and contraband tobacco.
In coordinated raids across the country, officers seized over 5,100 litres of nitrous oxide from a warehouse and the residence of a suspect in Malaga, believed to be linked to the trucks used for transport. Another major bust in Alicante uncovered more than 2.5 million illegal cigarettes being unloaded from a truck, officials said.
The group, reportedly made up of Spanish and Eastern European nationals, allegedly hid the illegal goods within legitimate cargo shipments bound for France and other European countries. Police have arrested seven suspects in connection with the operation.
While nitrous oxide is widely used in dentistry and medicine as an anesthetic, its recreational use, which induces short-term euphoria and relaxation, has surged in recent years, especially among young people. Health experts caution that excessive inhalation can lead to nerve damage, loss of consciousness, or even death.
In response to growing misuse, several European nations have imposed tight restrictions or outright bans on the recreational sale of laughing gas.
