Lahore Bans Entry of Heavy Traffic Amid SmogLahore Bans Entry of Heavy Traffic Amid Smog
The Punjab government on Sunday ordered a set of stringent measures to curb smog and air pollution in Lahore, launching round-the-clock monitoring of trucks and trolleys carrying construction material and banning entry of heavy vehicles that do not follow standard operating procedures.
Under the new enforcement plan, authorities will monitor construction material trucks and trolleys 24 hours a day. Officials said they will implement a zero-tolerance policy against vehicles emitting visible smoke and will take daily action against overloaded trolleys. Transporters must fully cover sand, gravel, soil and other loose materials with tarpaulins before using public roads.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stepped up checks at Lahore’s entry points and will impose heavy fines and vehicle suspensions on operators who violate environmental rules, the administration said. EPA teams, along with WASA and district officials, will run continuous water-sprinkling operations at construction sites and identified dust zones to suppress airborne particles.
Officials added that water sprinkling will begin at night to reduce dust ahead of morning traffic, and that all field units will remain deployed until air quality improves. The provincial government also directed a strict enforcement campaign against vehicles that discharge excessive smoke, with immediate immobilisation for repeat offenders.
The chief minister has ordered that no truck or trolley carrying construction material be allowed to operate without a proper tarp, and she has instructed all departments to submit regular reports on anti-smog activities. Authorities said they will publish enforcement data and fines to increase transparency and deter noncompliance.
Punjab’s tourism and public information teams will expand an awareness campaign to educate drivers, contractors and the general public about the new rules and best practices for reducing dust and emissions. Officials said the combined approach of monitoring, penalties and public outreach aims to bring measurable improvements in Lahore’s air quality ahead of the winter smog season.
Authorities warned that strict penalties, including heavy fines and vehicle bans, will continue until air quality indicators stabilise, urging citizens and businesses to cooperate to protect public health.
