Prices of essential medical equipment and diagnostic kits have surged sharply in Islamabad, raising concerns over healthcare affordability in the capital.

The cost of a wheelchair has doubled from Rs 9,000 to Rs 18,000, while crutches have jumped from Rs 700–1,600 to Rs 2,500–4,000. Sugar meters, once available for as low as Rs 500, now cost up to Rs 2,500.

Stethoscopes now range from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, up from Rs 500–700. Blood pressure machines that previously cost Rs 1,500–2,800 are now priced between Rs 4,500 and Rs 6,000.

Larger diagnostic devices have seen even steeper hikes. Chemistry analyzers now cost Rs 600,000 to Rs 700,000, up from Rs 200,000–300,000.

Test prices have also risen sharply. Liver function (LFT) and renal function (RFT) tests, which were Rs 300–700, now cost up to Rs 1,100. Thyroid test kits have increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000, and fitness test kits from Rs 1,200 to Rs 5,000.

These price hikes come amid growing inflation and currency devaluation, putting additional financial pressure on patients and healthcare providers alike.
