Pakistan has approved the country’s largest-ever wastewater treatment project in Lahore, a development aimed at tackling the city’s long-standing sanitation and environmental challenges.
According to official details, the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the Babu Sabu Wastewater Treatment Plant, a major urban infrastructure project designed to treat sewage water before its discharge into the River Ravi. The initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to control river pollution and improve water quality across Punjab.
A spokesperson for the housing department said that 836 acres of land at Babu Sabu were acquired in 1992–93 for this purpose. The project, which carries an estimated cost of Rs 52 billion, will be one of the most advanced and largest treatment facilities in the country’s history once operational.
The plant’s first phase will focus on treating sewage from Cantt Drain, Multan Road, and Gulshan-e-Ravi, three of Lahore’s most polluted drainage zones. This phase will be completed in collaboration with the French development agency Agence Française de Développement (AFD), which will provide both technical and financial support.
Officials said that during the initial phase, the facility will process 88 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater. Once fully functional, the total treatment capacity will increase to 198 MGD, significantly reducing the volume of untreated sewage flowing into the River Ravi.
The project is expected to take around four and a half years to complete. Authorities have outlined that the Babu Sabu plant is part of a larger framework under which six wastewater treatment plants will eventually be constructed across Lahore to ensure all sewage is properly treated before disposal.
Environmental experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a critical step toward preventing further contamination of the River Ravi, which has been receiving untreated waste for decades. They also noted that the project could set a precedent for other major cities facing similar sanitation crises, including Karachi and Faisalabad.
The government believes the project will not only improve public health but also support sustainable urban development by promoting cleaner waterways and safer reuse of treated water for agricultural and industrial purposes.
