The World Bank (WB) has reported a rise in Pakistan’s national poverty rate, stressing the need for sustained, people-centred reforms to protect vulnerable groups.
The report, “Reclaiming Momentum Towards Prosperity: Pakistan’s Poverty, Equity and Resilience Assessment”, is the first comprehensive review of poverty and welfare trends since the early 2000s.
It noted that poverty fell from 64.3% in 2001-02 to 21.9% in 2018-19, but has risen again since 2020 due to COVID-19, inflation, floods, and macroeconomic stress, while Pakistan’s consumption-driven growth model has reached its limits.
